Care and Maintenance of Aluminium Joinery

Altus have prepared a comprehensive Homeowners Guide covering the care and maintenance of your Nulook windows and doors. The Guide provides you with useful tips around cleaning and maintenance of:

The Guide is not a detailed maintenance manual (or a Warranty). It is recommended that the homeowners refer to the suppliers care and maintenance instructions that are relevant to the products installed, for instance performance of the glass installed in your home and the hardware you have selected for the aluminium joinery.  Supplier website addresses are available from the Homeowners Guide.

Good House Keeping

This is common sense information to keep your windows and doors operating smoothly and without fuss. The Guide covers 6 easy steps, from vacuuming along the sills and tracks to checking that the seals and rubbers around the glass are replaced when needed (subject to the environment).

Taking Care of Powder Coat and Anodised Window and Doors

Nulook window and door joinery requires regular maintenance to ensure joinery performs at its best.  As a general rule, the harsher the environment, the more regular the maintenance required to keep you joinery in top condition. Joinery that is covered by verandas or wide eaves and not subject to natural rain wash needs regular cleaning to avoid damage to surface finish on both the aluminium framing and hardware.

Again you are referred to the Nulook Homeowners Guide for care and maintenance information. The surface finisher supplier (website) will be able to provide more comprehensive powder coat and anodise information.

Do not use solvents – strong solvents type cleaners should not be used. These are harmful to the extended life of your joinery.

Maintenance of Anodising

Anodised aluminium joinery is not only attractive, but also offers a durable and tough wearing finish. Some deterioration of the anodic oxide coating may occur, mainly as a result of grime deposition and subsequent attack by moisture, particularly if the moisture is contaminated with sulphur compounds.

Regular cleaning is essential to preserve the finish of anodised aluminium over a long period. The following guidelines apply:

Regularly washing anodised joinery will ensure a long lasting product. In general the following programme is recommended:

For additional protection, especially in harsh environments, waxing with a good quality car wax after washing will assist in lifting and maintaining the appearance of your anodised joinery.

Damage to anodised surfaces may occur during building. Painters may accidentally splash paint on newly installed windows and doors, marring their appearance. The cleaner must act quickly and remove such splashes with a soft cloth moistened with water. Using water based paints allows the cleaner to clean with water – using solvents may put your joinery at risk.

Window and Door Hardware

Periodic maintenance of hardware is essential, this includes locks, sash handles, hinges, levers, rollers, Uno bolts, etc. This applies particularly to mechanisms with moving parts that require lubrication.
The guide covers:

The Guide includes information on the lubrication of mechanisms, care for electrical entrance systems and open/close advice for sash handles. At the same time there may be a need to adjust the strike plate or roller adjustment for a sliding door.

Cleaning and maintenance of Glass

Cleaning and maintenance of glass requires fully understand the type of glass you have in your home. The Guide covers the following:

Regular washing and drying of glass windows and doors are required to ensure long term durability. In urban areas washing should be done every three to six months.

It is advisable to check that frame drainage is not blocked this can affect laminate and insulated glass units.

On-site Protection

Please note: Nulook do not offer plastic applied films or on-site applied roll on coatings as a part of their standard product service and delivery.

Sills of doors should be taped to prevent damage when door is used as a “walk through” during building construction.
