Taking a look at the 2017 Auckland Architecture Awards
Since 2009, the New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA) rewards exceptional architecture in each of their eight regional branches.
On April 26, a wide range of projects were awarded in the peer-reviewed Auckland Architecture Awards this year. The winners of a local award can then go on to win another award on the national level.
Here is an overview of some of the winners of the 12 categories.
Education Awards
The AUT Manu Hauora (MH) Building by Jasmax stunned the jury with its use of deep red cladding panels to frame the green courtyard. The architect-panel also commented on the relaxed and inviting ambiance of the newly-established campus in South Auckland.
Instead of the traditional authoritative aura of educational institutions, AUT feels and looks more like a bright living space and encourages a positive albeit serious environment.
Housing Awards
The Davis House in Orakei won Mercer and Mercer Architects an award for its balancing act of opulence and simplicity. The volume of the main interior part of the house is complemented by the intimate rooms surrounding it as well as the large outdoor area.
Heritage Awards
One of the winners of the Heritage Awards was Peddle Thorps work on the Australis Nathan Building in Britomart. The building's Victorian facade has been restored to its former glory, balancing historical references with contemporary influence, which the judges said is a brave and excellent move.
Commercial Architecture Awards
The vertical insertion of the Kauri Timber Building on a small piece of land on Fanshawe Street is a successful attempt to enliven the commercial part of Auckland. Robust yet elegant, the lightweight veil of the building gives an industrial aura while remaining aesthetically pleasing.
Hospitality and Retail Awards
McKinney and Windeatt Architects' work on Amano in Britomart indicates a shift to crafted details and subtle planning in a large volume space. The restaurant and bakery is a successful combination of consistent architecture, a variety of materials and a focus on the dining experience, the judging architects suggested.
